Meet Ms. Zarin
This month’s featured staff member is Ms. Zarin, our hard-working secretary! She took a few minutes away from answering the phones to tell us a bit more about herself.
Q: What schools have you worked at?
A: T.E. Scott is my 1st permanent job with the Surrey School District. Prior to getting my job here, I was on clerical spareboard for 9 months which took me to many different schools within the district on a daily basis.
Q: What’s the best part about your job?
A: The best part of my job is the KIDS! I love it when they come to visit at the office, have a funny story to tell, sing me a song, or show me something they are proud of. I have the BEST stories because of my job…..
Q: Where is the best place you have ever visited?
A: New York!!! I just went to New York for the first time this winter (I was there for New Years Eve and saw the ball drop). I loved it there…..would definitely like to go back in the summertime to see it in a different season. We spent a lot of time wandering around Central Park and I think it would be beautiful there in the summer. In addition to New York, I love St. Thomas/U.S. Virgin Islands in the Caribbean. I have been there a few times on a couple different cruises…..I LOVE the cobble stone streets and the SHOPPING!
Q: What activities do you like to do in your spare time?
A: In my spare time I like to run, watch movies, snow ski, water ski, and hike. My husband is an avid cyclist and he MAY convince me this summer to buy a bike and join him….he’s been trying for a while now, so MAYBE.
Q: If you could hop on a plane and go anywhere, where would you go?
A: Italy…..or Africa…..or Greece…..hmmmm….it’s just so hard to decide. I definitely have a large bucket list of places I would like to travel to……When my husband and I retire, we want to travel the world.
Q: Do you have any children?
A: I have 2 children…..My son, Tristan, is turning 16 at the end of February (yikes!) and my daughter, Kaitlyn, is 13. They are the centre of my universe! Tristan is a competitive swimmer with the Surrey Knights Swim Club and he has just started (last year) doing triathlon…..he went to B.C. Summer Games for triathlon last summer and placed in the top 10 in the province. Kaitlyn is my dancing queen! She has been dancing for as long as she could talk and walk. She does everything style of dance (except for hip hop – and it’s not that she wouldn’t like to do hip hop – there just isn’t enough hours in the week to fit it in). She travelled to Poland in December with Team Canada and competed at the World Championships of Dance where she earned a silver medal in Ballet in the junior division. When I am not at work, I am a busy mom chauffering them both from activity to activity – so my answer to the question above – what do I like to do in my spare time…..there really isn’t a lot of that! But that’s okay…..they are both growing up so fast and I know that will change.
Q: How long have you worked in Surrey?
A: I have worked in the City of Surrey all of my adult life…..I have been with the Surrey School District for 1 1/2 years now. Prior to me working for the District, I was a legal assistant and a medical stenographer, both of which I did in Surrey. In addition to my job at T.E. Scott, and my job as a Mom, I also help my husband out (who owns his own business) with clerical/billing.
Q: Do you speak any other languages?
A: No; although, I would love to be able to speak French and Italian fluently. That may be something I add to my bucket list now that I think about.
Q: What’s the funniest thing that has ever happened to you?
A: Marrying my husband! He keeps me laughing all the time…..my daughter gets her sense of humor from him, definitely. He is always playing jokes on me…..he tells me that’s what I love about him
Q: What is your favourite food?
A: Anything Italian!
Q: What’s your favourite book?
A: I love a good mystery/thriller!
Q: What’s your favourite movie?
A: Hmmmmm…..that is tough. I like all different genres of movies, but probably my favorite movie of all time has to be White Christmas and Singing in the Rain…..I LOVE MUSICALS!
Q: Is there anything else that you’d like the T.E. Scott community to know?
A: Some people may find it interesting to know that I was a national level figure skater growing up….that is where I met my husband!
